The Sundial Issue #2 Cover
The Sundial, Ohio State’s historic humor magazine, had been out of print for 17 years when my friends decided to bring it back. They drafted me on as Art Director, we assembled a team, and so began an extraordinarily fun period of my life.
Our first issue was a smash success, so we wanted to follow it up with something good to prove we weren’t just a flash in the pan. That something was The Historical Issue.
I knew I wanted to play off of a great work of art, and I think my original idea was to paint a shittier version of the Mona Lisa, but even the shitty version I had in mind was (and continues to be) well beyond the scope of my abilities as a painter, so I painted over it in Photoshop shittily instead.
When a certified genius friend of mine saw the cover on Facebook, he applauded me for such a clear reference to some painter who I guess makes their bones off graffiti on well known works of art. I’d never heard of that painter before in my life, but, being the mensch I am, I took full credit as if that had always been my plan.
